This could not have been accomplished without the help of our 200+ volunteers scattered throughout the province. The volunteers gave a total of 545 hours spent in the classroom and an additional 475.5 hours spent travelling to and from presentations for a whopping total of 1020.5 hours of volunteer time!

To acknowledge National Volunteer Week, we have added a Volunteer page to our website. New volunteers can visit the webpage to read about how to become a volunteer speaker and to sign up. It was held in the Opaswayak Cree Nation at Joe A. Ross School. It went well.

I had about 17 Aboriginal youth in my presentation and they all seemed to enjoy MY delivery of the material (hahahahaha, just kiddin')... quite a few of the participants understood the importance of the subject and shared some personal stories about workplace injuries.

On Friday, I sat in on a resolution session. It was cool. During the session, the young folks identified subjects that they felt were of utmost importance in their communities. I was happy to see that a couple of them identified Occupational Health and Safety awareness and training as one such area. They wanted more training and better access to information. I gave'em the thumbs up and spoke a little about what we do.

As always, I took a couple pictures.

A tree in OCN.

The flight back to Winnipeg.

Neepawa, Ste. Rose du Lac and Gilbert Plains

It's been a super busy week doing presentation. I kicked off Monday morning doing presentations to nearly 150 students at Neepawa Collegiate. Ed Hinsburg was there to give me a hand, and his help and expertise is always appreciated. Thanks Ed! We were able to get some students to try on some safety equipment like protective aprons, gloves and a fall restraint harness.

I followed up with Ste. Rose du Lac and Gilbert Plains on Tuesday. At Ste. Rose School we were able to have the S1 students join the S2, S3 and S4 students for the presentations. The more the better that's for sure. The more students hear about our program the better chance they have at successfully navigating a safe work experience. After I was done there, I jumped in the truck and headed off for Gilbert Plains. The S3 and S4 group needed some waking up, so I got them involved in an unsafe work refusal role play which went well. Since it's so important for this to be done correctly, I thought it would be best to let them play it out. The S1 and S2 group were fantastic. Lots and lots of good questions and good group participation. I hope they all have a safe work experience. Thanks so much!

-Dave

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://safe-wot.blogspot.com/2005/03/neepawa-ste-rose-du-lac-and-gilbert.html' title='Neepawa, Ste. We set up booths at the Otineka Mall in O.C.N., The Pas. This was a great opportunity for both of our organizations to meet new people, and tell them what we offer.

The MB Safety Council was represented by one of their Safety Officers, Al Roschuk. He brought all the cool toys for "show and tell". Al was able to talk with people about the machines that he brought and the programs that the MB Safety Council offers.

Al and I also had the chance to be in the parade for the festival. This was a fun and new experience for us both.

For more info. These are very enjoyable because the students eventually get out into the working world and it's good to give them a heads up for what's out there.

Oak Park was a great presentation. The students were very involved with stories of their own and lots of good questions (keep those coming when you start your jobs as well). I had the opportunity to present for the first time with Kim Hamilton from the Worker's Compensation Board. This was Kim's first opportunity to volunteer with us and we sincerely appreciate her coming out. She covered all the bases on WCB, and is looking forward to helping out with more in our presentation next time around. Thanks very much Kim!

Shaftesbury was lots of fun as well. This is where I first started out doing presentations a few months back and it was great to see new faces in the crowd eager to take in the information. My most recent trip was to Dauphin and Laurier. I had only stopped in Dauphin once on my way through and didn't get the full experience this small city has to offer. The presentations at MacKenzie Middle School were fantastic. Lots of handshakes and "good work" words were passed on, which are greatly appreciated. The students were all attentive and wanted to know more. Getting ready for the work world is not easy, but these students look like they're going to be pros and will stay safe at the same time. Bob Day made his way out for one full day of presentations to observe. Much appreciated Bob. Many thanks to the students and staff at MacKenzie Middle School for their warm reception. The candy platter tasted great!

Pour mes nouveaux amis a Laurier et surtout à Jours de Plaine, je veux vous merciez beaucoup. I have been meaning to post this info for a while now! On October 25 and 26 I had an opportunity to visit Duke of Marlborough School in Churchill, Manitoba. I made the trek to Churchill with Kelsey of Frontier School Division, traveling companion extraordinaire! I talked with the students in grades 7-S4 about common hazards, their rights as workers, and how to report a workplace injury or illness. The students were terrific and the principal, secretary and teachers at the school were exceptionally welcoming.
The school is part of a large complex which houses the hospital, school, ice rink, swimming pool, town offices and other offices.

This was my first trip to Churchill and it was the best time to go since the polar bears were migrating along the coast of Hudson Bay. The town was packed with tourists from all over the world who hoped to catch a glimpse of some bears out on the tundra. We didn't have much time for sight-seeing or bear-stalking, but one evening we hired Jim the taxi driver to take us out to the dump and he didn't disappoint! We saw four huge polar bears plus about five arctic fox. It was fantastic.

Just to give you an idea of how big these bears are - the one you see in this photo is over 1000 pounds and compared with the other bears we saw, he is on the skinny side. Each one of this bear's legs were approximately the size of my body, and I am 5'4" tall. Of course, this is just an estimate since I was not willing to get out of the taxi and stand beside the bear.

In Churchill, they have to be very careful about bears that wander into town. Sometimes at night you can hear sounds sort of like firecrackers going off to scare bears away. Bears that wander into town get put into the bear jail, and some bears are air-lifted out of town to protect the people. Talk about biological hazards! :) Thanks to all of the people in Churchill (and the bears) for the memorable trip! I can't wait to go back one day.

Here is an inukshuk in Churchill:

Take Your Kids to Work Day!

It's Take Your Kids To Work Day!

I hope everyone out there has a safe and enjoyable day observing what their parents do for a living. Preparing students for "Take Your Kids To Work Day" is tough, but very rewarding. Given that some students get hurt when they go to their parents work, our work is invaluable. We're there in conjunction with "Take Your Kids To Work Day" and to prepare them for that, but we hope that most of the students can take this beyond that specific day and apply it to their workplaces.

We had very interesting times at Sisler, I spent the earlier part of the week presenting with Blaine Duncan from MGEU. Alan took over Sisler on Thursday and I moved onto Churchill High in the morning and onto Isaac Brock in the afternoon. Ellen Olfert joined me for those presentations, as well as the ones we did today at Sargent Park. So far so good and it's going to be a wonderful long weekend!

-Dave

Isaac Newton's S.W.O.T. The students that we presented to were mainly in the vocational classes which was great for them considering that they can get an early heads up on safety before they start on their career paths. It's important to remember that all students should have the opportunity to hear our safety message because many students have jobs while they are in High School so they can make some money for maybe a car or college or maybe even to help out their families.

Many of the young workers that filled out our student survey at the end of our presentation commented that they didn't know that they had worker rights and that they liked hearing about WHMIS.

Its important to remember that when you start working its your right to know if your going to be dealing with any chemicals that could harm you. It was so great to get the chance to hear some of their personal experiences and to learn where they were presently working. It was neat to listen to all the other work experience that people have had before entering their program of choice. I wish you all the best in your career and remember to work safe.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://safe-wot.blogspot.com/2004/09/louis-riel-arts-tech-centre.html' title='Louis Riel Arts & Tech. It was great.

A couple of the young women were under the impression that babysitting isn't really a "job." But, it really is and there are some definite hazards involved in the job.

Babysitters often have to WORK ALONE. This is a workplace hazard because if something happens to you, there's nobody there to know. It's also a hazard for the child because if you slip, fall and get knocked out, there's nobody watching the kid.

So make sure that if you are ever asked to work alone by a boss or supervisor that there is a WORKING ALONE PLAN in place so that at least one other person will know if you get hurt or injured, or whatever.

The pictures show the classroom at the T.R.Y. program (no faces are visible, as usual).

Marymound School Chat Session

Alan and Myself had the awesome opportunity to deliver our S.W.O.T. message to two groups of young workers at Marymound School today. They shared their experiences with us that ranged from working on places like the farm, the fast food industry, as bicycle technicians, babysitting, the health care industry and many more.

One young worker had mentioned how she was exposed to dirty water that cows had been hanging around in. This is was a great opportunity for Alan and I to talk about "Biological Hazards" (like bacteria called ecoli) that young workers can be exposed to and that they need to be aware of. Thanks for the great story!

With permission, Alan and I wanted to share a comment that was given to us by one young worker that made us feel real good about what we are doing.
The Question in our Student Survey reads "Did you learn anything new? What?"
The answer from the young worker was "I have a voice in my job about my safety"

Thank you so much Marymound we had a great time, and lunch was wonderful!

Dave and Kerilyn at Sturgeon Creek Collegiate

Kerilyn and I presented to an S1 class. There was not much workplace experience among the students, but they were attentive nonetheless. One gets the feeling they were interested in what we said, but they are just not sure where to apply it at this time. It went well.

The group had some good work experience and one girl actually had worked for more employers than me.

One of the guys told us a pretty crazy story from when he worked construction; he had to work on a ladder that had it's legs grounded on a sheet of wood that was placed between a couple of beems. This ladder was higher than 8 feet off the ground, so he should have been wearing fall protection. He also said that one of his co-workers actually fell off that ladder on a separate occasion because the base was so wobbly... luckily for him, he wasn't seriously injured.

In this case, the guy should have been told that he needs to wear fall protection while working at a height above 8 feet (The Right To Know). He also had the right to refuse the unsafe work and ask his supervisor to provide him with a safer way to get his work done (The Right To Refuse Unsafe Work).

This picture is of Alan and Dave presenting.

The Staff Retreat

Last week we all went to Oak Hammock Marsh to go over team priorities, discuss strategies and prepare for the up coming school year of SAFE Workers of Tomorrow presentations.

Maggie, Dave and myself also went over the entire presentation for the first time. One of the "New Guys" at Workers of Tomorrow. I hail from the Winnipeg Labour Movement. I've been involved for about 3 years now, starting out with the Industrial Workers of the World and continue to be active to this day. Shortly after that I was elected to the position of vice-chair for my union local's district, CAW local 2002 district 200 at Air Canada. I became a delegate to the Winnipeg Labour Council for my local in February of 2003 serving first as an alternate, and eventually full delegate.

In June 2003 I graduated from the Labour College of Canada in Ottawa. I decided then to pursue higher education in the labour movement and became enrolled at the University of Manitoba in the Labour and Workplace Studies program.

After being laid off from Air Canada in March of 2004, I became involved in election politics. I first served as an animator and organizer for the CLC's National "Better Choice" Labour Issues Campaign, and then moved on to become an infamous NDP "Pollcat." I've been with Workers of Tomorrow for a few weeks now and I'm very much up to the challenge. Apart from labour activities, I'm highly active in my church with youth and social justice ministry. I enjoy travelling the globe and learning about culture and language.
